Pavements & verges

Who is responsible for the autumn leaf clearance?

Residents will be wondering who exactly is responsible for what when it comes to sweeping up leaves and other debris from our roads and pavements.  You would have thought that it is obvious, and that long ago the roles of both the County Council and the Borough Council had long been resolved.

Makeshift warning sign

Unfortunately, this does not seem to be the case, as we discovered that for reasons that are quite unclear our borough seems to have different ideas to all the other boroughs in the county.  Maybe it goes to explain why every year the sweeping up of leaves (or snow and ice for that matter) never seems to be done properly.

The Society is pursuing this and hopes eventually to get to the bottom of the problem. As the signs shown indicate, HCC have put them up in order to be seen to be warning of a pavement hazard, when of course either they, or WHBC, should have just removed the leaves in the first place.

The Society is pursuing this through correspondence and hopes eventually to get to the bottom of the problem.

Why not just clear the leaves?
