A splendid total for the 2015 Oxfam Herts Hike: £7,539!
We couldn’t have done this without each and every one of you – so THANK YOU. If you walked, donated money or prizes, sponsored the event or volunteered your help on the day, all together you helped Oxfam achieve a super total. This money will help those less fortunate than ourselves in West Africa, getting clean water and sanitation to the mothers and children attending the malnutrition centres in rural Niger.

On the day over 270 people walked with the youngest only 5 years old, although there were younger folk in pushchairs. Some people came from as far as Kent and Cumbria to take part. It was great to see six Yr 11 students from St Albans Girls School tackle the 19 mile route. One of our veteran walkers, a gentleman in his late seventies, also completed 19 miles. You are never too young or too old to enjoy the healthy benefits of walking.
Herts Asian Women’s group walked 5 miles on the day and made great homemade samosas in addition to arranging a curry meal on Sunday 27th September which raised £550.
Thank you to all the people willing to take time out to support us. We had over 40 volunteers working hard on the day (and in the weeks and months before, checking the route and signage needed). Some faithful supporters come back to help us each year after moving away from St Albans. We were lucky to have great weather, which makes everyone happier and is very fortunate for those manning the checkpoints, and the day had a great vibrancy.
Well done to you all. It is heart-warming to find that people are willing to think about others in places so far away. There are so many charity appeals for us all to support but we hope you will continue to support Oxfam. This years hike will be Saturday 24th September 2016 – we hope to see you there!
Thanks on behalf of all of the Herts Hike team, from Hilary Tyrrell (Chair of Oxfam Herts Hike)
