Our walkers have a choice of routes, this year it’s 3, 5, 8, 14 or even 20 miles.  The three and five mile walks take place inside Heartwood Forest and the longer walks are circular routes taking in villages further north such as Wheathampstead, Ayot St Lawrence and Kimpton.  Walkers can decide on the day which route they want to do.

Below you can access a map of all routes & information if you are interested in walking:

Each year the Oxfam Herts Hike fundraises for an Oxfam project in the developing world.  This year we will be supporting the “Weather proofing” project  in Honduras where farming families on the frontline of climate change are helped to feed themselves despite more frequent droughts and floods.  Click here to learn more – Honduras Project

Carmen Fúnez, 24, is a pioneering young woman leader from Nueva Arcadia in Copan Region. Elected as a leader in her town aged just 18, she has a strong commitment to serving her community and breaking down the barriers which normally prevent young women from taking up leadership positions.  When her community’s water source was threatened by a land deal, Carmen was supported by the project to coordinate a community purchase of the land. The project has also helped to install a new water system, meaning that the community now has nearby, secure, clean drinking water supplies.  Oxfam will continue to work with communities and our partners to develop more women leaders like Carmen, as well as supporting local communities to protect the natural resources which they rely on.

Herts Hike Details

All the Herts Hike routes start from the Scout hut at Heartwood Forest.  It is accessible by bus or car, and parking is available.  All routes are waymarked and points such as road crossings are marshalled; written instructions are also provided.  People walk the route at their own pace following the signs.  Starting times vary, eg for the popular 8 mile circuit it is any time between 9am and 1:30 pm.  The longer distance walkers need to start by 9:30 am.

We welcome walkers from local schools, youth groups and community organisations as well as individuals, families and friends.  Maybe you could get a team from work together & ask your company to Match Fund?  Fundraising is made simple using our Just Giving page.

We also welcome help on the day at Walk HQ and at the various checkpoints around the route.  The previous day, Friday 23 September, we need volunteers to walk the routes in teams putting up signs.

We will be delighted to hear from walkers and also volunteer helpers.  In the meantime please use the “Contact Us” link to get involved or email the team on hertshike@gmail.com if you would like to know more.
